NEW PRODUCT AVAILABLE AS PC CARD FOR NEW AND
EXISTING LAPTOPS
CAMBRIDGE, MA.- April 2, 2002- Caveo Technology, the leading
innovator of motion sensing technologies, today announced the release
of Caveo Anti-Theft, an integrated security solution for laptop
computers, available in the form of a PC Card (type II PCMCIA).
Tested by over 50 beta testers, Caveo Anti-Theft is a proven, active
security system that protects both physical and intellectual property.
Caveo Anti-Theft is the first and only laptop
security system on the market to offer both theft deterrence and
data protection. Caveo Anti-Theft deters theft by detecting motion
and issuing audible warning signals. If an armed computer is moved
beyond a distance specified by the owner, the system assumes theft
and implements strong security responses, including shutting down
the computer, preventing access to the operating system, and sounding
an audible alarm (optional). The product also has an integral encryption
option to protect confidential information, and enhances the security
of encryption by providing secure storage off the hard drive and
by securely managing operations involving encryption keys, user
information and passwords. The system is independent of the computer,
and Caveo's proprietary Motion Password provides an easy and
convenient method for arming and disarming the system whether the
computer is on or off.
The PC Card is based on Caveo's proprietary firmware
and software combined with the ADXL202, a miniature, low-cost, iMEMS
micromachined motion sensor manufactured by Analog Devices (NYSE:
ADI). The integrated, rechargeable battery allows the Caveo Anti-Theft
system to operate for over three weeks. The battery automatically
recharges when the computer is on.
The need for such stringent laptop protection
is obvious. According to Safeware Inc., the largest U.S. insurer
of laptops, a projected 387,000 laptop computers were stolen in
the U.S. in 2000, up 21% from 1999. In annual surveys of companies
and governmental agencies by the Computer Security Institute, laptop
theft has been consistently reported by about 60% of the respondents
during the past five years.
"Laptop theft is a major concern and a costly
problem that grows worse as the laptop increasingly becomes the
computer of choice for the business and private user," said
David Lee, founder & CEO of Caveo. "Caveo Anti-Theft is
a practical, easy-to-use, and affordable solution for the average
person concerned with his or her laptop investment, as well as for
the business person concerned with valuable data stored on the laptop."
The first Caveo Anti-Theft PC Cards reached the
market in February 2002, at a retail price of $99. Caveo Anti-Theft
is available for purchase on Caveo Technology's website and through
a number of retailers, online catalogs and resellers. Some of these
companies include: MicroWarehouse, a multi-billion dollar specialty
catalog and online retailer; PC Mall, a rapid response supplier
of technology solutions; TigerDirect.com, a catalog and online retailer
of computer products; GreenPages, a corporate IT Solutions Provider
and Global Marketing Partners, Inc., which offers express distribution
with Ingram Micro, the largest global wholesale provider of technology
products and supply chain management services.
Caveo Technology, headquartered in Cambridge, MA., is the leading
innovator of products that use advanced motion-sensing technologies
to solve important, real-life problems. It is developing a portfolio
of products where performance and convenience advantages can be
derived from its core technologies. These include handheld electronic
