Touches can cause irreversible
damage to works of art, especially priceless paintings.
Although museums can erect guardrails and use infrared
technology to deter people from touching paintings and
other precious objects, these approaches are expensive
and impractical in many situations. Sensor systems are
needed to detect touch when it occurs, whether inadvertent
or purposeful, and are critical in early identification
of attempted vandalism or theft.
The Caveo-enabled Sensicast ART
Object Alarm System addresses this critical market need.
Based on Caveo's touch detection sensor system and Sensicast's
wireless communications technology, the complete system
consists of touch detection nodes, a wireless networking
system, and easy-to-use management software. The touch
detection nodes are battery-powered and are mounted behind
the painting or in a nearby hidden location, with attached
sensors that do not touch the canvas. The node contains
a wireless radio that enables instant communication to
local and central security stations, and a sounder that
can emit a local alarm. Caveo’s touch detection technology
enables the nodes to detect light to medium touches to
precious paintings, as well as any attempt to lift or
move the painting (or other precious object). False alarms
are minimized because the product can differentiate between
touches and building vibrations, air currents, and other
normal environmental disturbances. For more information, click
